jessalynn asked:

An older relative of mine has recently had a flare-up of what is known as false gout, which differs somehow from regular gout. He has seen his doctor about this, but has continued to have episodes from time to time.

Any suggestions of preventative measures or treatments that seem to work? Thank you for your help.

Isaiah

I know stuff like chicken and potatoes and no soda’s sweet tea or anything like that will help. Mainly water and Sprite salmon paties stuff like that helps regular gout and it should work on false gout!

I am sorry to hear that your relative is suffering from pseudogout. Pseduogout is different from gout yet there are some similarities. Both form crystals in joints, that is where they are similar. Gout forms uric acid crystals inside the joint and pseudogout forms calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the lining and cartilage around the joint.

Gout is much easier to treat and prevent because we know the cause and can treat it. Pseudogout is much harder to treat and prevent because we do not understand why the body is making these deposits.

The only prevention we have now is low doses of colchicine, a drug commonly used to prevent and treat gout, may reduce the number of pseudogout attacks your relative will experience.

I wish there was more that can be done but right now this is the only preventive solution there is.
