Pseduogout is different from gout yet there are some similarities. Both form crystals in joints, that is where they are similar. Gout forms uric acid crystals inside the joint and pseudogout forms calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the lining and cartilage around the joint. Gout is much easier to treat and prevent because we know the cause and can treat it. Pseudogout is much harder to treat and prevent because we do not understand why the body is making these deposits. The only prevention we have now is low doses of colchicine, a drug commonly used to prevent and treat gout, may reduce the number of pseudogout attacks your relative will experience.
